The Last Unknown: Now Streaming on discovery+

In this stunning, 1-hr documentary, Ansel Adams Award-winning nature photographer Ian Shive joins researchers from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service on a mission to one of the most remote places on Earth, Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. This rugged, wild archipelago of over 2,500+ islands in the Bering Sea not only protected by remote isolation, tiny population, and extremely harsh weather, but also in their designation as an Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.

In these remote, humanity-bereft habitats, wildlife exists as it has since the beginning of time. It is as though the wildlife know this is their sanctuary. These islands are a cornerstone of Earth’s global ecosystem. Millions of seabirds come to the Aleutians to mate, swirling around the cliffs like bees around a hive. Most travel thousands of miles from Asia, Russia and the United States–some from as far away as Los Angeles. Some of the largest congregations of marine mammals on earth are found in the archipelago’s coves; pods of orcas and minke whales live free. On the shoreline, northern fur seals fight each other to protect their territory - and their chance to reproduce.
